Grenadiers Sweep IU South Bend

The IU Southeast softball team swept IU South Bend 3-0 and 10-4 on Sunday.

In game one, starter Madison Wathen earned her first IU Southeast victory with a complete-game, one-hit shutout. She walked three and struck out six.

The Grenadiers had a chance to open the scoring in the bottom of the first when Cassi Roman singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. A single up the middle by Autumn Oehlstrom sent Roman home but the throw beat her and she was tagged out at the plate.

In the bottom of the fourth, Oehlstrom singled and pinch runner Alaina Winzeler stole second. A flyout moved her to third but a groundout ended the inning.

IU Southeast finally broke through in the sixth. Savannah Gaither led off with a double and moved to third on an error.

After Erin Templeman drew a walk to load the bases, Kendall Brown hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring in Gaither.

Macie Zink followed with a two-run double.

Autumn Oehlstrom had two hits in the win.

In game two, IU Southeast fell behind 1-0 until Oehlstrom singled to right, scoring Gaither.

The Grenadiers exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. Pinch hitter Madison Wathen started the rally with a single and Issy Wright followed with a double to left-center.

Cassi Roman followed with an infield single which drove in a run.

After another single by Gaither loaded the bases, Oehlstrom came through again, this time with a single up to the middle driving in two.

Erin Templeman followed with a RBI single to right and Macie Zink cleared the bases with a three-run double.

A throwing error got two runs back for the Titans a bases-loaded walk by Olivia Zarantonello cut the deficit to 8-4.

The Grenadiers added on a pair of runs in the sixth when Brooklyn Gibbs tripled down the right field line scoring Brown, who had singled. A sacrfce fly by Brynlea Bennett extended the lead to 10-4.

Mckenzie Rice worked three innings of relief for the win. She allowed three runs, one earned, one three hits, walked three and struck out three.

Brooklyn Gibbs allowed one hit and two walks while striking out one in scoreless relief.

The top four in the lineup of Roman, Gaither, Oehlstrom and Erin Templeman all had multi-hit games, and Gaither was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Autumn Oehlstrom and Macie Zink each drove in three.
